Madame Butterfly
Madame Butterfly an opera written by Giacomo Puccini which takes place in the early 20th century. The opera is about a Lieutenant in the US Navy who while in Japan gets married to Cio-Cio-San. The two get marries but San's family disown here due to her getting married to the Lieutenant. They make love and Cio-Cio-San becomes pregnant with his child. He then leaves for three years and in this time she has the baby. She continues to wait for his return but when he returns he is now married to an American women. The lieutenant finds San and takes the child they made together and he and his wife presently leave with the child. Coo-Cio-San in the end kills herself because her husband takes their child away and she just cannot continue to live.
The stop motion animation of Madame Butterfly was beautifully put together and filmed. Although the film did not include everything it did keep the most important parts. The movement of the characters are very smooth so it gives the performance a great aesthetic appeal. Getting the characters to move that way just shows the expertise of the film maker being able to convey the meaning of the opera to the audience.
Through out the short film there is a lot of symbolism when it comes to the way the characters are portrayed. The scene where San gives birth it shows here having a fish bowl as her stomach, and the child is a fish that breaks out as a fish and transforms into the child. I think this was a creative way to portray child birth because in real life it could be considered breaking into the world. The scene where she is dismantling herself i think works very well with the film because it is like a model killing themselves literally because with out the model being able to hold itself together it would not be able to move correctly. overall this short film did the opera justice in conveying the main theme of the show.
